Introduction to Mastering Build a Dungeon
Build a Dungeon is a Roblox simulation and tycoon game from Exploration Guild, in beta as [GUILDS] Build a Dungeon. You lay the corridors, place monster units and traps, and defend a dungeon crystal against endless waves of heroes.
Heroes spawn at one one-way entrance and follow your path toward the crystal. Coins pay for buildings, traps and parts, Dark Souls are spent on monster units, and the official description confirms that monsters keep catching heroes while you are offline. Noob to pro comes down to two habits: making the route longer for the heroes, and spending every Coin and Dark Soul on something that defends the crystal.
Understanding the Basics: From Empty Cave to Hero Trap
Recorded runs start with one one-way entrance, a corridor you build, and the crystal at the far end. Heroes only walk connected tiles, so a dead end sends them back, and recorded layouts used stone corridor pieces for the real route and wooden floor pieces as dead ends.
Progression Stage
Primary Goal
What Actually Works
First waves
Hold the crystal
One corridor from the entrance, a starter unit such as a Skeleton Warrior, and any traps you have already rolled.
After the wave 10 checkpoint
Turn hero traffic into Coins
Potion shops along the route, a treasure room so heroes take the long way, and a skill-tree node such as trap mastery or unit damage.
High waves and Labyrinth
Scale damage and collection
Oil, fire and lava floor trap chains, boss units in a Boss Room, mutations and Labyrinth runs.
A checkpoint at wave 10 appeared in a recorded run, and Update 6 added a dropdown for returning to an earlier checkpoint.
Leveraging Promo Codes for Fast Progression

Advanced Layout Design and Monster Placement
Layout is the main lever once the basics work. High-wave runs snake instead of running straight and use dead ends to turn heroes around. A treasure room is guaranteed to pull heroes toward it, so keep it on the long route rather than beside the crystal, and remember that potion shops do double duty: heroes stop to buy potions on the way in — one of the biggest Coin earners in a recorded run — and the stop drags them through your traps.
Decoy Dead Ends
Wooden floor pieces that lead nowhere make heroes walk in and turn back out.
Potion Shop Lanes
Heroes buy potions before they fight, so several shops keep selling while each stop pulls the wave through your traps.
Treasure Room Pull
Heroes always try to reach a treasure room, so use that pull to move them off the shortest path.
Nothing attacks through a wall. In a recorded run, units behind a wall could not touch the heroes at all, while hero archers shoot through walls and hero healers keep the wave alive. Keep physical units on the tiles heroes must cross, ranged and magic units in open lanes behind them, and remember that a thief hero disarms traps within one tile of itself.
Trap Combos, Mutations and Skill Tree Upgrades
Fire is the trap element with a buff attached: oil keeps a hero burning for the next three tiles, and a lava floor increases fire damage. Community runs lay oil every three tiles so the burn never drops off, then add tar pits to slow the wave, bear traps and falling rocks for burst damage, and wall-mounted arrow traps on the corridors heroes must walk.

Mutations raise health, damage, population and Dark Souls cost without changing attack interval, range or ability percentages, and boss units get 50% more health and damage inside a Boss Room.
Rolls supply units and building pieces. Community gameplay shows a Legendary at 80 rolls, a Mythic at 160, a Secret at 300 and a Divine at 2,000, but drop rates and pity thresholds are not published, so check the in-game interface. Update 6 added Divine and Mutation pity, auto-roll filtering for repeated rolls, four Shrine Tiles that buff nearby units and the randomized three-floor Labyrinth, which runs solo or in a group. Update 7 moved Guilds into beta with mutation changes, trap upgrades and auto rejoin, and skill-tree nodes such as gold rush, soul harvest, unit damage, population, trap mastery and battlecry are percentage upgrades.
Maximizing Your Earnings with Boosters
Coin Booster and Soul Booster Potions temporarily increase what you earn, so when you use them matters more than how many you own.
Tip
Save both potion types for sessions where you plan to clear waves, and compare the escape menu hourly rate before and after a layout change to see whether the new route earns more.
Warning
Do not spend Dark Souls on every roll. A Cursed mutation costs 20x the Dark Souls of a normal unit, and thief heroes can strip a one-tile trap carpet, so spread your traps and upgrade the units you field.
Between codes, potion shops, wave clears and offline catching, a mid-game dungeon earns while you are not fighting.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start when I first build a dungeon noob to pro style?
Connect one corridor from the one-way entrance, place a starter monster unit on the tiles heroes must cross, and add the traps you have already rolled. Put the first Coins into a longer route before anything else.
What are Dark Souls used for in Build a Dungeon?
Dark Souls are the currency for obtaining monster units, while Coins buy buildings, traps and parts. Both come from defeating hero waves and from redemption codes.
How do I stop heroes from reaching my dungeon crystal?
Make the route long and awkward with winding corridors, dead ends, a treasure room pulling heroes the long way and potion shops they stop at. Then stack oil, fire and lava floor damage on the tiles they must cross, and keep units in open lanes because nothing attacks through a wall.
Where can I find new codes for Build a Dungeon?
Watch the official Discord server and the Exploration Guild community page, then redeem anything new in the in-game Settings window, because code lists change with each update.
