What Build a Dungeon Actually Is
Build a Dungeon is a Roblox simulation and tycoon game from Exploration Guild, published under the official title [GUILDS] Build a Dungeon. The developer's own description sets the premise: build your own dungeon, defeat endless waves of heroes, put monsters in the dungeon to loot heroes, and collect cool buildings and strong monsters for more cash. It is free to play and currently flagged as a beta that updates regularly.
The pitch flips the usual dungeon-crawler role. Instead of raiding, you own the dungeon. Heroes spawn at a one-way entrance, follow the corridors you have laid down, and try to destroy your dungeon crystal, so everything you place exists to slow, damage or redirect them before they arrive.

The Core Loop: Build, Place, Defend
Lay the Route: Roll for corridors, floors, walls and rooms, then build a path from the one-way hero entrance toward your dungeon crystal.
Place Your Defenders: Spend Dark Souls on monster units and Coins on traps and defensive buildings, then position them along the route.
Run the Wave: Heroes spawn at the entrance and walk your corridors, fighting whatever you placed in their way.
Cash Out and Rebuild: Defeating waves earns Coins and Dark Souls; a failed run restarts from your last checkpoint, so you can rework the layout and try again.
Two currencies drive everything. Coins pay for dungeon buildings and defensive traps, while Dark Souls are used to obtain monster units; both can be earned by defeating hero waves or awarded by redemption codes. Coin Booster and Soul Booster Potions temporarily multiply what you earn, which makes them worth saving for a push.
Income is not only about kills. Recorded runs show potion shops becoming one of the best money makers, because heroes stop to buy potions on their way through, and a treasure room is a guaranteed lure: place one and heroes will always try to path toward it. Both let you steer invaders into the corridors where your traps and units are already waiting.
Monster Units, Mutations and the Roll Economy
Monster units are rolled rather than crafted, and the rarity ladder runs Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Mythic, Secret and Divine. Recorded gameplay shows the roll track paying out a Legendary at 80 rolls, a Mythic at 160, a Secret at 300 and a Divine at 2,000. Those figures are community-recorded milestones rather than an official probability table: the developer has not published drop rates, so treat the in-game interface as the authority on odds and pity.
Tip
Auto-roll filtering, added in Update 6, is the practical way to handle repeated rolls. Recorded runs use it to hunt for strong units to carry a layout instead of rolling one at a time.
Mutations are the second layer of unit progression. They multiply a unit's health and damage, raise its Dark Souls cost, and add extra population; they do not change attack interval, range or ability percentages. Boss units placed in a Boss Room get 50% more health and damage.

Warning
Mutated units are not cheap. Recorded sessions show single high-end unit purchases costing 190,000 to 220,000 Dark Souls, and community notes describe units as much harder to obtain than building pieces.
Traps, Rooms and Hero Counterplay
Traps are the cheapest way to turn Coins into damage, but they are not fire-and-forget. Recorded builds lean on spike, poison and bear traps for direct damage, tar pits to slow heroes down, wall-mounted arrow traps, fire traps and falling rocks placed on the route. Oil is the standout: heroes who step on it keep burning for the next 3 tiles, and lava floors increase fire damage on top of that.
That setup holds against most wave types until a thief hero walks through, because thieves disarm traps in a one-tile radius around themselves. Healer heroes keep incoming waves alive, and archer heroes can attack through walls while your own units cannot attack through walls at all. Spreading traps out and keeping monster units behind them is the counterplay recorded players settled on.
Rooms and structural pieces matter just as much. Recorded Build Mode lists include stone corridors, wooden floors, curved walls and curved corridors, dead ends, crossroads and junctions, plus rooms such as the armory, treasure room, dragon nest, graveyard and lava chamber, and defensive pieces such as the frost stone wall, wooden barricade, ballista tower, turret, blacksmith and Life Spring. Dead ends are a genuine tool, since recorded builds use wooden dead-end tiles to send heroes down a wrong turn and back out again. Shrine Tiles, added in Update 6, buff units placed around them and cannot be built on, so they change how you lay out a room rather than replacing it.
Updates, Labyrinth and Long-Term Progression
Update 6 is the biggest content drop so far. It added the Labyrinth, a randomly generated three-floor maze with monsters and treasure chests that you can run alone or with friends; rewards scale with the difficulty you choose and are shared in group runs. The same update added four Shrine Tiles, Divine pity and Mutation pity, advanced auto-roll filtering, and moved the 2x Battle Speed skill-tree upgrade earlier. Update 7 then pushed the game toward guilds, which entered beta alongside mutation changes, trap upgrades and auto rejoin according to the community update log. Because the game is in beta, treat any specific figure in a guide as a snapshot and confirm it in game.
The skill tree is a long-term percentage boost for the whole dungeon rather than a per-character progression system. Recorded runs invest in coin-income nodes such as "gold rush", plus soul harvest, unit damage, population, trap mastery and battlecry, which raise income and combat output across the whole dungeon.
Two systems soften the grind. Failing a run sends you back to your last checkpoint rather than to wave one, and the official description confirms that monsters keep catching heroes offline, so time away from the game still produces progress. The escape menu also reports an estimated hourly rate based on your highest wave; one recorded session showed roughly 8,400 Coins and 385 Souls per hour.
Verdict: Should You Play Build a Dungeon?
Strengths
Weaknesses
Clear loop: build a route, place units and traps, defend the crystal.
Still in beta, with save, index and balance fixes in the update history.
Two currencies to manage: Coins for buildings and traps, Dark Souls for units.
Unit acquisition is grindy, with recorded high-end purchases at 190,000-220,000 Dark Souls.
Offline hero catching keeps progress moving while you are away.
No voice chat or camera support, and servers hold six players.
Update 6 added the Labyrinth, Shrine Tiles, pity and auto-roll; Update 7 added guilds beta.
Counterplay can feel lopsided: archers shoot through walls and thieves disarm traps in a one-tile radius.
Build a Dungeon is at its best for players who like tycoon and idle progression with a defensive puzzle on top: the appeal is tuning a route, then watching a wave fail against it. If you want hand-controlled combat, a story campaign or a social hangout, the beta's six-player servers and lack of voice chat will not give you that. For a free Roblox game with an active update cadence, the loop is easy to recommend to genre fans, as long as you expect a grind and check current numbers in game.
You can play it on the official Roblox page, follow announcements in the Exploration Guild community, and join the official Discord for update notes and code drops. Verified redemption codes such as 2KCCU! (5k Coins and 3k Dark Souls) and DRAGONALTAR (3 Coin Booster Potions, 1k Coins and 3k Dark Souls) are entered through the Settings button in the top-left corner and confirmed with Redeem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Build a Dungeon a Roblox game or a PC game?
It is a Roblox game by Exploration Guild, played through the Roblox client. There is no verified standalone PC or console version.
Do I need to stay online for my dungeon to earn rewards?
No. The official description states that monsters catch heroes offline, so your dungeon keeps producing while you are away.
How do I get better monster units?
Roll with Dark Souls. Community-recorded milestones sit at 80 rolls for a Legendary, 160 for a Mythic, 300 for a Secret and 2,000 for a Divine, and Update 6's auto-roll filtering helps manage repeated rolls. Official rates are unpublished, so check the in-game interface.
Why do my traps suddenly stop working against some waves?
Thief heroes disarm traps within a one-tile radius, which is why trap-heavy corridors can stop working. Recorded players relied on monster units behind the traps instead.
