What Shrine Tiles Are in Build a Dungeon

Build a Dungeon flips the usual dungeon-crawler setup: instead of raiding a dungeon as a hero, you build one, station monster units inside it, and defend against endless waves of heroes. Heroes spawn at a one-way entrance and follow the corridors you place toward your dungeon crystal. Coins pay for buildings, traps, and parts, while Dark Souls are spent on monster units.

Shrine Tiles are part of the tile set you can add to that layout. The developer's Update 6 announcement states that Shrine Tiles provide buffs to units positioned around them, and that four Shrine Tiles were added in the same update. Update 6 also introduced the randomized three-floor Labyrinth, Divine and Mutation pity mechanics, advanced auto-roll filtering, and an earlier 2x Battle Speed skill-tree upgrade.

The one placement rule the developer has confirmed is blunt: nothing can be placed on top of Shrine Tiles. That makes a shrine the opposite of an ordinary tile. You do not stack a unit or a trap on it — you build the value on the tiles around it.

Layout element Confirmed behaviour What it means for a shrine build
Shrine Tile Buffs the units positioned around it Keep the shrine tile itself clear and treat the neighbouring tiles as your real defensive slots
Monster units Obtained with Dark Souls and placed inside the dungeon to fight heroes Station them on the tiles surrounding the shrine so the buff reaches them
Buildings, traps, and parts Purchased with Coins A shrine competes for the same floor space as corridors, traps, and rooms, so plan its footprint first
Boss Room Boss units get 50% more health and damage in a Boss Room A boss unit standing on a shrine-buffed tile combines both bonuses

Four Shrine Tiles

Update 6 added four Shrine Tiles that provide buffs to units positioned around them.

Nothing on Top

The developer states that nothing can be placed on top of Shrine Tiles, so the surrounding tiles carry the entire payoff.

Unpublished Numbers

The buff type, its size, and any unlock or cost requirement have not been published. Read the current values from the in-game interface instead of a third-party list.

Planning Placement Around a Shrine Tile

Placement is the whole decision with a shrine, because the tile itself does nothing for the heroes walking past it. Put it where your defenders already do the most work: a corridor every hero has to walk down, or the approach to the crystal.

Heroes follow the corridors you lay rather than wandering freely, and a treasure room pulls them toward it. A shrine on that route sits in front of far more traffic than one tucked into a dead end.

  1. Choose the fight before the shrine. Pick the corridor or room where your defenders already stop the wave.
  2. Place the Shrine Tile first. Because nothing can be placed on top of it, lock in its position before you fill the surrounding tiles with units.
  3. Leave the shrine tile empty. Do not stack a monster unit, a trap, or a decoration on it.
  4. Fill the surrounding tiles with your strongest units. The buff applies to the units positioned around the shrine, so those tiles are where the investment pays off.
  5. Verify the effect in game. Confirm the current buff on the in-game interface before you rebuild a layout around it.

How Shrine Tiles Fit With the Rest of Your Defense

A shrine only matters through the units standing around it, so the rest of your dungeon decides whether the floor space is worth it.

  • Most units cannot attack through walls, and a wall directly in front of a defender blocks its attacks. Archers can attack over walls, which makes them easy to station beside a shrine in a narrow corridor.
  • Thief heroes disarm traps within a one-tile radius, so the tiles around a shrine are not automatically safe just because they are trapped.
  • Potion shops are one of the main income sources: heroes stop and buy potions on their way in, and the Coins they spend fund more buildings, traps, and parts.

A shrine buff applies on top of stats the unit already has, and mutation stats are listed before room bonuses and other buffs. The numbers you see for a unit are therefore not its final numbers inside a buffed room.

Bonus source Confirmed effect Applies to
Shrine Tile Buffs units positioned around the shrine; values unpublished Units on the surrounding tiles
Mutations Golden 2.4x, Frozen 3.8x, Infernal 5.6x, and Cursed 8x health and damage, at 4x / 7x / 12x / 20x Dark Souls cost The unit itself
Boss Room 50% more health and damage Boss units

Tip

Player-recorded roll milestones put Legendary at 80 rolls, Mythic at 160, Secret at 300, and Divine at 2,000. Official drop rates and pity thresholds have not been published, so check the current counters in the game.

Warning

Do not wall in the units you station around a shrine. Units cannot attack through walls, so a shrine-buffed defender with a wall in front of it contributes nothing to the wave.

  • Confirm which tiles count as surrounding a shrine in the current build before finalizing the layout.
  • Keep the Shrine Tile itself free, since nothing can be placed on top of it.
  • Give every unit beside the shrine a clear line to the hero path.
  • Re-check the layout after an update: Update 7 moved Guilds into beta with mutation changes, trap upgrades, and auto rejoin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do Shrine Tiles do in Build a Dungeon?

The developer's Update 6 announcement states that Shrine Tiles provide buffs to units positioned around them, and that four Shrine Tiles were added. The exact buff and its size are not published, so check the in-game interface.

Can I place a monster or a trap on top of a Shrine Tile?

No. The developer states that nothing can be placed on top of Shrine Tiles, which is why the surrounding tiles matter so much when you plan a shrine area.

How much bonus health or damage does a Shrine Tile give?

Official values have not been published. Treat any percentage from a third-party page as unverified and read the number from the game itself.

How do I get Shrine Tiles?

Shrine Tiles arrived with Update 6. Building parts and monster units both appear in the game's roll system, which is why Update 6 added advanced auto-roll filtering, while Coins are spent on buildings and traps and Dark Souls obtain monster units. Check the in-game index for how each Shrine Tile is currently obtained.
